LaShaya Howie is a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her primary research centers materiality (i.e. the role of the dead body, memorials, etc.) in her exploration of death, mourning, and memorialization amongst people of African descent in the U.S. Howie holds a B.A. from Howard University in Afro-American Studies and an M.A. from New York University in Africana Studies with a Concentration in Museum Studies. While at NYU, she held the MacCracken Fellowship.
